Introductions

I’ve been publishing on Medium for 6 years; it’s time I introduced myself

I’m the creator of Pretty Deadly Self Defense, and the founder of our parent company, Singe Network. I write about gender-based violence, self defense, and patriarchal structures that perpetuate inequality for everyone except the .001% — no, that’s not a typo.

Here’s a bit about what makes me me: I’m originally from Chicago, although at this point in my life, I haven’t lived there longer than I did live there. Still, there will always be a bit of the W in me (Cubs, Giordano’s, no ketchup). Even more accurately, Medusa’s, Exit, and the Double Door.

Punk Never Dies

Chicago is a music town, and it’s where my taste for punk rock was born and nurtured in my teen years — not just the music, but punk as a way of life. I never had a Mohawk (although I did have a pretty killer Devil’s Lock), but the spirit of ’80s punk infused my soul and has stayed with me my entire life.

I’m a GenXer, first generation American, raised by Old World parents who felt my main duty in life as the Girl Child was to get married, birth and raise children, and then take care of my parents when they got old. But I also grew up with three brothers, and it was impossible live in such close sight of the freedoms my brothers…
