But I do take my own advice! I train for my own safety and security pretty much every day, and I teach others how to do it too. It's the basis of my entire business. That's why, even though I made a foolish decision to walk around the Old City by myself, I also got out of there without incident, completely unscathed. I traveled to Pakistan fully aware of the potential dangers I would face as a mature woman traveling alone, but also fully aware of my own capabilities and life experience that I can draw on. I also know that "Taharrush" is a common form of attack throughout Southeast Asia and the Middle East, as we saw it happen to both Stephanie Custance and Lara Logan, which is why I very purposely did not take out my phone, retrace my steps, and broadcast that I was lost -- I knew I would instantly be surrounded with lots of men volunteering to be "guides", and being surrounded by a crowd is the main thing I wanted to avoid.... and did.
I also purposely didn't ask any women for help because I know that, very often in restrictive communities, women will be beaten if they're seen talking to a Westerner.
I would ask you to please think twice before reprimanding people for their actions, especially when they've already acknowledged their own mistake in an article. You don't need to do it again when someone has already claimed the error. It's really obnoxious.
